How Often You Should Flip Your Mattress

by Paige Pesko

For many years, the common wisdom from within the mattress industry has been that you should regularly flip your mattress to help extend its lifespan. But as the study of sleep has progressed, so too has the technology that goes into our beds, rendering former requirements obsolete. While some methods such as rotating are still necessary, other types now require a more nuanced response. Here’s more information on how often you should flip your mattress.

Newer Mattresses

With the rules of the generations being left behind, the rules about flipping your mattress no longer apply either. Most mattresses sold now don’t require being flipped and actually advise against it. This is because they’ve now added padding or other features in the mattress’ top layer that can get damaged if too much weight is put on it.

Though most mattresses no longer require being flipped, there are some situations where it’s still recommended. One such exception is innerspring mattresses. These should still be flipped every six months and rotated to help increase longevity. There are also some memory foam and latex mattresses that benefit from being flipped as well. Finally, some mattresses have a firm and soft side that can be flipped based on preference.

When and How To Flip

If your mattress does require being flipped, there are a handful of rules for how often you should flip your mattress and tips for how to complete the process. For most mattresses that need it, they should be flipped every six months. Innerspring mattresses, especially older ones, can require being flipped as many as four or five times every year. Be sure to consult the tag or your owner’s manual for more information on the necessity and frequency of flipping.

Follow a simple set of rules for flipping the mattress. Start by finding another person to aid you and clear the furniture and fragile objects from the area. Follow that by rotating the mattress 90 degrees so the long side is parallel to the headboard. Then, stand the mattress on its side and lay it down so the side that was facing up is now facing down. Lastly, rotate the mattress another 90 degrees and your mattress flip will be complete.
