How to Upgrade Your Bedroom This Weekend

Interior design can be a daunting process for most people – especially if you work full-time or stay busy with familial duties. However, a new look doesn’t necessarily require a total overhaul. When time is of the essence and you aren’t sure where to begin, you can make a big impact just by changing some key elements in your space. (And YES, you CAN do this over the weekend! Promise). Sometimes it’s a good idea to give your home a makeover if you are planning on moving anytime soon. This is because home improvements make it easier to sell your home. However, you don’t need to have an excuse like moving home to start redecorating, if you fancy a change then you can easily get started. And as stated earlier, you can do it over a weekend if you wanted to.

1) Out with the old

First, identify what you don’t like about your bedroom’s current look. Is the overall feel too cluttered? Eliminate some unnecessary knickknacks that are taking up space. Tired of the outdated canopy over your bed? Give it to a friend or donate it to charity. Once you’ve removed anything that doesn’t bring you joy or fit with your lifestyle anymore, you can start to add in new elements that do.

2) Dress up your focal point

The bed is a good place to begin since it carries a big impact, and the rest of the room will be easier to style if you use the bed as a centerpiece to complement. If you want to change up the color of your bedspread but don’t want to purchase a new one, try a duvet cover (which is essentially a large “pillowcase” for your comforter with a closure at the bottom). It’s a great way to bring a different aesthetic to your room without committing to lots of expensive bedding. And the best part? If you want to change things up again, it’s as easy as removing the cover.

3) New pillows for a pop of color

Most duvet cover sets come with shams for your existing full-sized pillows, but you’ll probably want to place some smaller throw pillows on your bed to accent them. This is a perfect opportunity to play with color and texture if the rest of your décor is relatively plain. If you have a chair or loveseat in your room, try putting a matching throw pillow there too. It will not only tie the look together, but also add comfort to your seating area.

4) Set the mood

Next, focus on increasing the “coziness quotient” of your room. If you have hardwood or otherwise uncarpeted floors, a rug can add some warmth. If you place it next to the bed right where your feet hit in the morning, you’ll never have to deal with a jarring, cold floor again! Another element that can affect your space’s mood is lighting. Getting new uPVC windows installed can take a little bit of time. For instant fixes, you can buy a new lamp, or just switch out the lampshades and light bulbs of your existing lighting. An inexpensive way to add ambiance is to purchase some string lights and drape them around your headboard. If you really wanted to upgrade the lighting in your room, you could change the style to a more modern one, similar to barn style lighting, to really make your room stand out and benefit from light.

5) Get a handle on it

You may not have time to change out larger furniture like your chest of drawers and bedside tables, but there’s a quick way to make them over – new handles! Just visit your local home improvement warehouse and pick your favorite style. Trading out your rusty metal drawer handles for some beautiful glass knobs will make a noticeable difference you’ll love.

6) Gallery wall to the rescue

Now let’s take a look at the walls. You may not have time this weekend to repaint, but you can refresh the look by moving around any artwork you already have hanging up, adding a new painting, or putting up a simple floating shelf. Instead of just displaying photos of family and friends in free-standing picture frames, get creative and make a gallery wall arrangement! Choose a grid pattern or any shape/combination that accents your wall. Additionally, your space will feel larger and brighter in a matter of seconds if you hang up a mirror. If you already have this type of feature wall already present in another room in your house, you may need to think about redecorating your wall in a different way. Designs like this marble wallpaper for your bedroom may persuade you to turn your attention toward wallpaper and stickers. What’s even better is that you don’t need to spend that much time doing it, as some of them have the peel and stick option. It’s definitely something worth considering if you want to change your interior.

7) Storage with style

If you don’t have much closet space or like to store your belongings out in the open, adding some creative storage solutions will help keep things tidy. (Well, at least tidier – we’re all only human!) Uniformity is key, so pick a style you like and try to stick with it. For example, we love the look of matching baskets lined up on open shelves or a hutch.

8) Fun with feng shui

It’s amazing what a general change of scenery can do, so don’t be afraid to experiment with furniture placement. Try facing your bed in a different direction or moving your desk to a new corner of the room. If you don’t have a group of body builders at your disposal to execute your vision, a multi-pack of furniture pads and sliders that will make the job a lot easier.

9) Greenery for that finishing touch

Finally, a wonderful way to add life to your room is to do just that – add life! If you grab some fresh flowers the next time you’re at the grocery store, arrange them in decorative vases to place in various spots throughout your space (such as your bedside table, desk, dresser, or windowsill). If you prefer larger potted plants, these look nice in the corner to help frame and anchor the space.

When you’re ready for a bigger change, consider stopping by The Great American Home Store for inspiration. You just might find the perfect bed, table, dresser or accessory to complete your dream room!

Game Day Essentials

In the immortal words of Don Henley, the boys of summer have gone. It’s FOOTBALL SEASON.

football-1583642_1280You might not get to tailgate with friends, but you can always find a comfy chair and prop your feet up (while munching on some delicious game-worthy snacks). Here are some Game Day ideas to help make your watch party a personal victory:

65_GP1) Rearrange the layout as necessary

A watch party is a very specific kind of get-together, so temporarily rearranging the furniture may be in order. Try moving all the seating to face the TV without obstructions. Remember that your guests will need to set down their drinks and plates, so we recommend strategically-placed accent tables in addition to the coffee table.

If you have TVs in other parts of the house, such as your bedroom, move them to the common areas for the party. No one will worry about heading to the kitchen for second helpings if there’s a TV on the counter!

Set the tone of the day! Sure, you could just wear the team colors – but why not incorporate them into your living room? Start by adding wall art of your team’s logo and scatter some assorted team merchandise on shelves or accent tables. Most online spirit shops carry home decor items such as throw pillows and blankets, and this is another great way to pepper team loyalty into your space.

Finger foods make for good snacks – especially chips and dip. There are so many homemade treats you could whip up (Pinterest is chock full of them), or you can cheat a little and order takeout from a local hot wing/pizza restaurant. We also recommend raiding the grocery store’s frozen appetizer section for snacks like Bagel Bites and pigs-in-a-blanket. You can somewhat offset the unhealthier options with a raw vegetable plate and low-fat ranch dip.

Then try to find party plates and cups in your team colors to stick with your theme. It’ll be like tailgating in the comfort of your home.

One of our ultimate favorite party recipes is Baked Potato Dip – trust us, it’s DELICIOUS and easy to make!Loaded Baked Potato Dip Recipe5) Prevent messes

Make sure to put plastic team-colored tablecloths over your wooden tables to protect them from spills (and folks who aren’t apt to use a coaster ?). You can also purchase an inexpensive slipcover for your sofa, or just cover it in washable throw blankets to easily clean up crumbs and debris.

If you’re concerned about your carpets, keep a small Rug Doctor or foaming cleaner close by to tackle potential stains right away.

KR3cc_Tyler_E134174_sports_m2736) Seize the opportunity for an upgrade

The best part about watching the game from home is not having to sit on hard stadium seating, but it’s not much of an improvement if your recliner is worn out. But at least we’ll have our Promotional Stadium Cups in our hands full of beer!A good brand to look at for an upgrade is La-Z-Boy. The Great American Home Store houses a La-Z-Boy Custom Design Studio, so you can not only test out which chair is right for you and your comfort level but also choose from lots of fabric/leather options. Our other favorite recliners are by Flexsteel, Franklin, Washington, and Best Home Furnishings. If you’d rather go for a lift chair, try Catnapper and UltraComfort. Any of these would be a good choice for your next “easy chair” so you can watch the game in comfort.

You may even want to prepare for unexpected overnight guests with a sleeper sofa or new mattress in the guest room. If you’re having lots of guests over for the night, you’ll need to think about where they’ll sleep a few weeks in advance. Check out a website like Modern Digs Furniture if you need to buy some new furniture.

Not everyone loves football, so you may want to carve out a space for guests who’d like to avoid anything sports-related. They could sit at the dining room table to chat, or maybe watch a movie in a spare room. This would also be great for kids if they were brought along for the festivities.

Bringing New Life to an Old and Out-Dated Room

You’re looking to buy a new sofa to replace your loved, worn out, and outdated one that’s sitting in your family room. You’ll want something that will last, but you also want to be sure that it’ll bring new life to an old room. In this post, we will discuss just how to do it!

The first thing to remember when designing a room is to pinpoint your personal aesthetic. What kind of colors, or design elements are you trying to pull out from this room? Once you grasp that the rest will come easy. Another thing to remember when designing a room is to embrace what you already know and love. Think about the room you’re adding to. You love the sofa that you’ve had since you and your husband got married, it was the first big purchase you made together, but you don’t want to get rid of it to add something new. Just because you have something that’s old doesn’t mean you need to ditch it in order to update your room. Look at that sofa and try to determine what your room needs. Could you improve your space by adding an exciting chair? What about some complementary accents to bring some life back in the room? Something else to remember is to not be afraid of your creativity. It is totally okay to mix old and new together! Another easy something that you could do is to select a statement piece in your room. So you love your old couch, awesome! Then choose to design around it and make it the star of your room!

Here are some other tips that will help you bring in something new or to refresh an old room:

  • Tell A Color Story
    • Telling a color story helps make the room look more focused and cohesive. Say that you have an orange arm-chair, decorate in shades of orange. Tell the world what you’re passionate about
  • MIx Different Time Periods
    • If you have a room full of vintage pieces throw in something more contemporary! It will help bring something new to an old looking room
    • It’s important to remember that a well-decorated room should look like it has been assembled over time
  • Be Spontaneous
    • Add boldness to your room by making a choice that you normally wouldn’t. Go for a brighter color or pattern, maybe even a style that might be outside of what you’re used to

There’s more to refreshing a room than you might think. There are some other important things that you need to consider before you purchase a new piece of furniture.

  • Consider the Location
    • Try to pick an empty spot, or a place that’s not super crowded. You want your new piece to either stand out or match what you already have
  • Think About Your Statement Piece
    • Do you already own a statement piece or are you looking for one
  • Have a Design Plan
    • This ties everything in, location, statement, and style. Unless you plan on being completely spontaneous, you should have a plan for what you want to do. You don’t want to get home and change your mind about the piece that you selected, you want to be satisfied with your choice. So it is really important to know what you’re looking for.

Finally, to wrap things up, here are some important Interior Design Lessons that Everyone Should Know:

  • Think of functionality, what’s the purpose of the furniture you’re buying?
  • Don’t hesitate to spend big on seating, you want to make sure you’re comfortable and also anyone else who will be in your home
  • Decorate! Add something more than just furniture to a room
    • Think pillows, pictures, plants, and other decorative pieces that will bring some life into a room
  • Remember that black adds a sense of depth to a room, consider utilizing some in the marginal areas throughout your room
  • Showcase your personality, let your guests know what you’re like
  • Think about the look of the room you’re designing
    • If you’re going vintage, try to learn all you can about that style and how to pull it off successfully.
  • Look for a new perspective
    • Not sure if you like a bookcase on a certain wall? Get your camera out and snap a before and after shot to see if you like it or not. Taking before and after shots can help you find new angles and see things in a different light.
  • Use an online room planner tool
      • There are a lot of really great room planners online that can help you visualize your room before you make any purchasing decisions, hang up décor or move furniture around. One tool that we love is It allows you to create a 3D room with thousands of 3D models of furniture, décor and architectural elements using an easy-to-use interface. You can then use its virtual camera to take photos of your design from any angle. If you’re looking for a more straightforward room planner, or looking to purchase furniture from Great American Home Store, check out our 2D room planner that will let you create 2D floor plans and drag in actual dimensions from products you’re considering to see how they will fit in the room.

We hope that these tips will help when you select a new piece of furniture for your home!
