10 Surprising Ways Lack of Sleep Can Affect You

It seems like common knowledge that our bodies need sleep to survive. Most all of us have experienced the side effects of staying up too late or trying to pull an all nighter. However, there are surprising consequences worse than drowsiness if missing sleep becomes a routine for you.

1) Weight gain

Lack of sleep weight gain

Sleep deficiency can cause you to crave carbs and fat laden foods. If you’re not getting enough energy from sleep, your body will search for it in other places. Not only can lack of sleep affect your eating habits, you also burn less calories due to lack of movement from feeling sluggish.

2) Impulse decisions

decision making

Lack of sleep can lead to self-control issues such as resisting impulses. When you lack the proper amount of sleep, it tends to affect your decision making in a negative manner.

3) Uncontrollable emotions

Not only does your sleep health affect your mood, but chronic insomnia can also increase your risk of anxiety or depression. Researchers found that people who only got 4.5 hours of sleep each night for one week felt angry, sad, and stressed. When the participants returned to their normal sleep routine, they reported a significant improvement in mood. There are many reasons why you may have some uncontrollable emotions such as a sense of fear or anxiety. One of these may be the feeling of being unsafe, which you should never have when going to bed. To make sure you feel secure in your own home, you may want to consider installing something like a home security camera so you can monitor activity around your home and deter any potential burglars or vandals.[x]

4) Always sick

always sick

During sleep, proteins known as cytokines are produced. The body relies on these proteins to fight off illness, infections, and stress. Without the proper amount of sleep, the production of cytokines decreases. Something you may want to consider is your comfort factor. If you are having trouble sleeping, your mattress could be one reason for this. You could look into a site like on Leesa.com, to help you find the best quality mattress, which aims to get you a good night’s sleep.
Researchers found that people with less than 7 hours of sleep were 3 times more likely to develop a virus or cold than a person with 8 hours or more of sleep. We also recommend having a look at neotericnutra.com at the products they offer. They help with sleep, joint pain and lots more.

[x]

5) Impaired vision

impaired vision

If you are continually missing sleep, your eyes will not adequately produce tears to lubricate your eyeballs which causes them to become dry and red. Without the production of tears, you could experience pain, light sensitivity, redness, or blurred vision.

6) Unusually clumsy

trip and fall

Poor sleep quality can affect your motor skills and reaction time causing you to be clumsier than usual. This increases your risk for injury.

7) Indecisiveness

Lack of sleep can affect your ability to make a decision. Not only is your decision-making affected, but sleep deprivation can also impair other vital cognitive functions.

8) Poor memory

Brain memory

Receiving the proper amount of sleep can boost your ability to learn and retain information that you gather throughout the day.

9) Heart health

A recent study linked insomnia to an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Even cardiovascular fatalities have been linked to lack of sleep. [x]

10) Skin

Sleep quality affects how fast your skin recovers from stressors. Researchers found that people with poor sleep quality are slower to recover from sunburns. [x] Researchers also found that poor sleep quality is associated with aging of the skin, diminished skin barrier function, and lower self-esteem. [x]

Maximize your sleep health

It’s recommended that adults get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. If you aren’t receiving the proper amount of sleep, it can leave you lacking in other areas of your life. It’s important to create the best possible sleep environment to ensure you’re getting the proper amount of rest without any disturbances. If you are really struggling to sleep, you could try this broad spectrum CBD oil, as CBD has repeatedly been linked to curing insomnia and providing better sleep. However, it’s always best to find out why you’re not sleeping well so you can get to the root of the problem.

Several factors can contribute to restless sleep. The very first piece of the puzzle is the right mattress. If you’ve had yours a long time, you could likely benefit from a replacement, especially if you’re consistently missing out on sleep. Providing yourself with a good mattress is an investment in your sleep health.

According to a study done by Oklahoma State University [x], a new mattress provided sleepers with significant improvements including:

  • 70.8% in sleep comfort
  • 62.0% in sleep quality
  • 55.3% in back pain
  • 50.7% in spine stiffness

Better sleep can be as simple as sleeping on a better mattress.

How To Tell When Your Room Needs a Makeover

Your home should be a place that reflects your style. If your home isn’t an appealing or comfortable place for you to relax, it might be time to consider a makeover. It could be as simple as adding vinyl wall decals to your bedroom walls, to help get you motivated every morning or changing the curtains, to even switching up the carpets and getting new furniture. Regardless of what you choose to do, if you like it, then that’s all that matters.

When undertaking a makeover consider using some portable storage to keep your stuff out of the way while you get to work! The following list is a few reasons why you might need to revamp your space.

1) You’ve had the same furniture for years

Futon

If you’ve had the same furniture since college featuring a well-worn futon and a desk as a makeshift dinner table, it’s probably time for a furniture overhaul. Or maybe you picked out furniture that you loved decades ago but the everyday wear and tear is beginning to show. Maybe you inherited furniture pieces from your great grandparents and the mixing of contemporary and antique styles clash.

2) Your kids/animals have taken dominion over the room

Dog

Any parent or pet owner knows how difficult it is to keep things clean when spills and accidents happen on a much too frequent basis. If your furniture has been collecting stains and scratches over the years, it might be time to opt to purchase new furniture. Luckily, newer fabric technologies such as Revolution and iClean fabric combat stains and spills before they have a chance to set in. Check out our selection of these stain-fighting fabrics here.

3) You’ve recently remodeled

empty room needs makeover

If you’ve recently remodeled a room in your house with a new wall color or new flooring from Carpet Now – Austin Carpet Installation, it might be time to think about getting new furniture to match the room. Starting fresh in a room makes decorating easier than ever.

4) You avoid going in the room

Most everyone has that one room that we prefer to shut the door to when guests come over. It may be an extra room filled with junk that you’ve accumulated over the years that you would prefer your guests not go anywhere near.

5) The room is full of clutter

Clutter

It’s easy to leave clutter scattered across the house when you live a busy lifestyle. However, this can make your life feel hectic and unorganized. This problem can call for a complete room makeover that features storage-capable furniture. A storage coffee table or ottoman makes it simple to quickly get rid of clutter without having to organize the entire room when you’re in a hurry.

6) You’re starting to see your decor style on nostalgic internet posts

old furniture

If your furniture looks like it could be a relic in a museum, it might be time to update your style. It might be hard to let go of cherished furniture, but you owe it to yourself and your guests to modernize your home decor with a complete room makeover.

If any of these apply to you, enter our Great American Room Makeover contest!

Ask the Sleep Expert #2: Trey’s Back at it Again!

The Sleep Expert is back to answer the questions our readers submitted here on our blog and on our social media accounts! (Click here if you missed part one.)

Ask the Sleep Expert #2ABOUT THE SERIES:

Getting a great night’s sleep shouldn’t be complicated, right? In a perfect world, we’d get tired at 10 p.m. and fall asleep the second we lay down. After waking up to the sound of chirping birds, we’d spring out of bed to take on the day (feeling rejuvenated and pain-free).

Unfortunately, life isn’t always perfect… in fact, it’s not perfect MOST of the time. Maybe you have pets or children who keep you awake at all hours. Maybe you sleep hot and wake up sweating throughout the night. Maybe you can’t find a comfortable position, so you toss and turn. Maybe you experience back pain in the mornings because your mattress doesn’t provide the support you need.

Whatever the case may be, it’s likely you have some sleep-related problems that negatively affect you the next day. You may brush them aside and soldier on, but they’re there. And that’s where the inspiration for our new Ask the Sleep Expert series came from.

What is the difference between a “high end mattress” and a “low/medium end (price-wise) mattress”? Is there really any benefit to spending more money if I am comfortable on a less expensive mattress?

As with most things in life, you normally get what you pay for – but if you find a cheaper mattress comfortable, that’s awesome! It’s all about what you’re looking to achieve. If longevity is important to you, I’d avoid the “cheapies.” More expensive mattresses are made with higher quality, durable materials that will retain their feel and shape for many years. Make sure to compare the types of springs/foam (higher quality will conform to the body and take pressure off the joints better). The mattress’s outer fabrics can make a difference too. This is an area where cheaper mattresses like to cut corners, but higher end mattresses normally have heat/moisture wicking fabrics to help you sleep cooler. Finally, higher end mattresses will often have great warranties – usually 10 years or more. Have a look into something similar to this koala mattress review after a year and have a look at what aspects they focus on reviewing and apply the same thinking while you’re prospecting for mattresses.

I’m in need of new mattress but haven’t a clue where to begin and how to begin. Any suggestions? My husband and I are troubled sleepers.

I suggest you first visit a mattress store and try the main 3 types of technologies: foam mattresses, innerspring, and hybrid mattresses (which means both foam and innerspring in the same mattress). Once you decide which you like, try some different brands that use that technology. The main thing is to trust your body over specs. Even if it looks good on paper, if it just doesn’t feel right, go with something else. There’s not really such a thing as a one-size-fits-all bed, because different body types interact with each mattress differently. We’d love to help you at The Great American Sleep Shop even if you’re just looking for some help knowing how to shop.

What’s the difference between mattress fill types?

The more popular fill types are springs, memory foam and latex.

Springs primarily resist compression and the push-back of resistance is the support. Memory foam is a visco-elastic foam that allows the body to sink into support layers. This foam can be manufactured with different ratings of density to give different feelings of comfort. Latex is a springy material that almost mimics the feeling of springs without the push-back against the body.

What type of mattress is best for side/back/stomach sleepers?

Side sleepers need a medium mattress with an element of softness to it. Too firm will cut off circulation to extremities and too soft would give improper spinal alignment, which leads to back pain. Speaking of back pain, this can be a lot for anyone to deal with, especially on a daily basis. With that being said, it may be as simple as doing some reasearch into sites like https://420highstreet.org/best-kratom-for-pain/ for advice on how to manage these pains effectively (if the use of strains is one you want to consider trying). Regardless of how you choose to manage these symptoms, hopefully you’ll be able to find a solution soon enough. However, your back pain may be an indication of something more serious, such as an annular tear, which requires medical attention. Medical professionals like Dr. Tony Mork can talk you through annular tear symptoms and how to tackle this condition. With a free phone consultation available, Tony should be able to identify whether your symptoms relate to an annular tear, or perhaps to another condition that involves lower back pain.

Back sleepers benefit from a firm mattress. The body can be in total contact with the mattress and the spine would be supported.

Stomach sleepers would benefit from a medium to firm mattress. If the mattress is too soft, the stomach sleeper would get too much bowing in the lower back (putting the body into a U shape) which would cause pain over time.

What is the optimal room temperature for sleeping/Will I sleep better if it’s colder?

Everyone seems to have their own opinion on this, so it all comes down to personal preference. However, many studies conclude that 65 degrees is the average person’s ideal room temperature for sleeping, especially if you sleep under a comforter. Per the National Sleep Foundation: “As you become drowsy, your temperature goes down, reaches its lowest level around 5:00 a.m., and climbs slightly as morning begins. This is why the air in your room can affect the quality of your sleep: if it’s too hot, it may interfere with your body’s natural dip and make you more restless through the night.”

If 65 seems too cold for you, try lowering the temperature a couple of degrees from the norm as an experiment and see if you notice a difference in your sleep quality.

If you don’t get enough sleep, how does it affect you the next day?

Sleep deprivation can negatively affect your body in many different ways. Drowsiness and a mental fog are common, but there are also other consequences such as increased likelinesss to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes if chronic sleep deprivation occurs. It’s very important that you sleep well each and every night!

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

When overnight guests arrive at your home, expected or unexpected, it can send even the most seasoned host into a panic. Remembering to set out everything they might need can be a daunting process! That’s why we’ve gathered the best tried-and-true tips to make your visitors feel completely at home in your guest room.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

1) Add a bench at the foot of the bed or purchase a folding luggage stand

Your guests will appreciate a nice surface to put their suitcase on so they don’t have to rummage through it on the floor.

2) Have some entertainment available

As your guests are winding down for the night, they may want to read or watch their favorite show for a while. Having some books, magazines and/or a TV in their room is a great way to make them feel at home. Another nice gesture is to put the Wifi password somewhere visible – maybe in a frame on the dresser?

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

3) Create a seating area

If space allows, add a little reading nook in the guest room. Many guests will like having place to sit that’s not the bed.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

4) Include a mirror

Give your guests a spot to freshen up with an eye-level mirror or sit-down vanity. This will keep them from feeling like they’re hogging the bathroom.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

5) Keep an assortment of extra pillows on hand

It doesn’t have to be a lot – maybe 2 traditional polyester fill and 2 down pillows to give your guests a choice of loft.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

6) …And extra blankets of varying thickness

If your guests wake up cold in the middle of the night, they’ll be infinitely grateful!

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

7) Provide a place to hang up clothes

If there’s a closet in the guest room, have some empty clothes hangers available. If not, a valet or clothing rack will work perfectly.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

8) Deck out the nightstand

Some good items to include are: a little dish to hold jewelry, a couple of glasses for water, a lamp, remote controls, and an alarm clock.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

9) Bring in some fresh flowers

There’s nothing like real greenery to make friends feel welcome! (But you may want to stick with a non-flowering plant or omit this step altogether if your guests have allergies.)

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

10) Put together a basket of travel-sized toiletries

In case one of your guests forgets something like their toothbrush or shampoo, it’s good to have some available. (Don’t forget extra towels, Kleenex, and pain reliever.)

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

11) Put an iron or steamer in the closet

Your guests’ clothes may get wrinkled in-transit, so take a cue from hotels and put out a small iron or steamer for them to use. If you have pets in your house, it’s nice to include a lint roller as well.

12 Tips for a Cozy Guest Room

12) Have some available plugs for charging

An easily accessible place to charge electronic devices will be much appreciated by weary travelers! If you want to go the extra mile, purchase a universal charger in case they forget their charging cords.

We hope you found these tips helpful! If you’re looking for more guest room design ideas, we’ve complied our favorites on Pinterest:

In future posts, several of our sleep experts will be answering the questions YOU submit to us, either in the comments section here on our blog or on any of our social media channels. But to kick this off, we asked sleep expert Trey Wolfe to answer the questions people ask him most often.

treys-ask-the-sleep-expert

How do you know when your mattress is too old?

Your mattress is too old when its inner support system reaches the end of its life. If you wake up in the morning with a little back pain or stiffness that works itself out once you’ve been up and moving for a while, that’s the main indicator. Other outside forces (like working out, tending to the garden, etc.) can certainly cause these symptoms, but if you’ve experienced consistent morning pain for a few weeks or months, it’s probably time for a new mattress. This muscle stiffness usually happens because your body was trying to compensate for a lack of support and pressure-point relief throughout the night.

A visual inspection of the mattress, with the sheets off, is another good way to know if it’s time to shop for a new bed. You definitely need to replace if you see valleys/areas of sinkage, because that means the mattress fill has stopped bouncing back to its original position.

Are mattress protectors a waste of money?

Absolutely not! Moisture is a killer to every type of mattress technology, so I always recommend putting a waterproof protector on your mattress. We all sweat in our sleep as our bodies are “rebooting” – some more than others. This moisture will seep into the layers of your mattress, and over time, mat down the materials to where they can no longer fluff or provide adequate comfort. The protector will also help guard your investment from things like drink spills or pet accidents, which helps protect your warranty.

Just make sure the protector you choose doesn’t have rubber or plastic backing, as these will trap heat against the body, have a look at some of the mattress toppers on sale with the dozy owl they’re bound to have exactly what you need.

I have a mattress pad on my bed. Will it work the same way as a mattress protector?

Though they may look somewhat similar, there’s a distinct difference between mattress pads and mattress protectors.

Mattress pads are more for comfort and don’t keep moisture from getting into your investment. They’re usually just an extra layer of the pillowtop cushion you can put on your mattress, underneath the fitted sheet. A mattress protector is a waterproof layer of protection that also goes under the fitted sheet, but shouldn’t alter the feel of your mattress. Quality protectors are also hypoallergenic and dust mite proof to help those with allergies.

Adjustable bases seem expensive. Are the benefits worth the cost?

In my opinion, yes. I’m a big fan of adjustable bases and find they can increase the overall feel of a mattress by tenfold. They’re especially beneficial if you have:

  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Sleep apnea. If this is something that you have been suffering from for a while, it is best to get it sorted, as it can have an impact on your daily life if not treated. Considering it could be as easy as looking into something such as Dentist McAllen on Google, you may find that your dentist will be able to give you a number of treatment options that could help you out.
  • Acid reflux
  • Sinus drainage
  • Foot swelling
  • Restless legs
  • Poor circulation
  • A loud snoring problem that bothers your significant other
  • A tendency to watch TV, read, or use your laptop in bed

Should I be rotating my mattress?

Yes! There are many schools of thought on how often you should rotate, but I personally rotate quarterly. That might be a bit much for most people, but I find it works for me. At the very least, I’d recommend rotating at least twice a year.

The heaviest portion of the human body is from the waist up – our legs, not so much. Rotating is beneficial because it gives the top half of your bed time to rest and recoup as the new bottom half of your bed. Think of it like getting a tire rotation on your car to get an even tread lifespan. By rotating your mattress, you can get a more even sleeping surface for longer.

Rachael Ray Home: The Upstate Collection

There’s a new furniture line at GAHS, and we can’t wait to tell you a little more about it!

social-media-image-3

So many of us have loved watching Rachael Ray over the years on Food Network shows like 30 Minute Meals, $40 a Day, Tasty Travels, Inside Dish, and more. She has her own daytime talk show, cookware line, pet food company, cookbooks… the list goes on. But now, Rachael can add “furniture designer” to her lengthy resume.

6040_4206k_model2

There’s a feeling that happens when family and friends gather around a table to share a meal and conversation, and Rachael Ray Home brings this warmth and joy to every room.

6040_622k_451_240x_174k

Her line is divided into 3 collections: Highline, Soho, and Upstate – the subject of today’s post. (Upholstered pieces will be featured separately.)

Upstate is a collection of curated, Americana-styled furnishings that reflect Rachael’s relaxed and casual home in Upstate, NY. The warm, rustic conciare cherry finish with distressing evokes a comfortable vibe with a hint of tradition. Custom pewter-finished hardware and accents complete each piece, and select items are available in a bianco white painted finish and nero black finish (both with slight distressing).

Rachael Ray Home is now on the showroom floor at both our Memphis and Southaven locations! If the piece you’re interested in doesn’t have an “Add to Cart” button, that means it’s not currently available to be purchased online, BUT you can visit one of our Home Stores to order it. (And that goes for anything in the entire catalog. If you want it, we can order it for you!)
